Graphic Design Heroes

Chip Kidd populates a one-man industry of celebrity book design as Art Director for Knopf and subject of NY gossip rags. Paula Scher runs one of the most prestigious design firms in the world (Pentagram). Two of the most revered graphic designers in America converse about what makes good design, how they have redefined the arena, and what’s next.

Food

The few old guard food critics sample a sort of extravagance unavailable to the many. Now, the many, average media consumers, are making “gourmet” a state of mind. Food marketing has blown up to proportions unthinkable a generation ago. Homesteading and whole produce represent one of the only bright spots in a failing U.S. economy. Sites like Chowhound that started as a resource have become a fantasy portal for “food enthusiasts.” Chow.com founder and CBS Interactive Vice President, Jane Goldman joins Edible Manhattan/Brooklyn publisher Brian Halweil and June Russell, Farm Inspections Coordinator for Greenmarkets, in a conversation on food today.

Designer. Toys.

Paul Budnitz’ story is the stuff of myths. A safety analysis coder and video game developer by high school, a filmmaker by college, several successful business ventures into his early adulthood. Now he sits at the helm of KidRobot—a designer vinyl producer that has transcended its initial M.O. by tapping into fashion and music, notably capturing a certain pop-culture zeitgeist born of the ever-mainstreaming skateboarding culture.

Entrepreneurship

Marc Ecko has distinguished himself as a streetwear mogul and continues to astonish the business world with controversy and bravado. Speaking to him in Imprint Lab’s 1-2-1 series is the heir apparent of lifestyle brand cults, jeffstaple (Staple Design).

Post-print Newspaper

Newspapers have been decimated. Many blame the internet, but the truth is unavoidable: news and information media have permanently evolved. Today, the gold standard is still based in print, but the internet has made blog-sourcing inevitable. What price credibility? What price newspaper? To answer we have the Managing Editor of ProPublica, Stephen Engelberg talk about the post-print newspaper. A non-profit news site, ProPublica fills the gap left by the print establishment.
