5 Records That Changed My Life

Ego trip is an influential media/news/publishing organization, waving the flag for “The Arrogant Voice of Musical Truth.™ Since 1994.” The ego trip magazine lasted for four years, was 13 issues deep, and the set the bar for originality, irreverence, quality writing, and good design, in contemporary music rags. After the magazine closed, the ego trip team (Sacha Jenkins, Elliott Wilson, Jefferson “Chairman” Mao, Gabriel Avarez, and Brent Rollins) went on to release The Big Playback, an old school rap compilation on Rawkus Records; published ego trip’s Book of Rap Lists on St. Martin’s Press; and then ego trip’s Big Book of Racism! with Regan Books; this spun off into several TV shows for VH1, including TV’s Illest Minority Moments presented by ego trip, the 3 part ego trip’s Race-O-Rama!, ego trip’s The (White) Rapper Show, and ego trip’s Miss Rap Supreme. You can find lots of content from this incredibly talented crew on their current Egotripland website, including a series of interviews based around “5 Records That Changed My Life” with talented creatives like past ICL conference speakers Dan the Automator, and Jeff Staple. You can stream the songs while you read about them, which is a nice touch too.
