The Future of Bottled Water?

The Future of Bottled Water?

Plastic water bottles, meet your match… sort of. Using a culinary technique called “spherification,” a few London-based industrial design students created the Ooho: a blob-like water container made out of an edible algae membrane. Simple, cheap, and edible. Probably not the most sanitary solution however, but you could always just prick it with a needle and suck it out, I suppose.

With San Francisco recently banning all plastic water bottles on city properties, we should probably expect plenty of new startups popping up to offer alternative eco-friendly solutions as, presumably, more cities begin to follow San Francisco’s lead.

In similar fashion, a company called Wikipearl is using the same technique but applying it to common food items, such as fruit, ice cream, yogurt, and cheese. Currently only available in four Whole foods locations in Massachusetts, and a “bar” in Paris.
