The secret history of the Del Rubio Triplets/Project Milly

Los Angeles-based songwriter and artist Allee Willis—in addition to writing the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance” (!!!)—keeps one of the more interesting sites out there (and I really mean out-there). Especially if you might enjoy, say, a roundup of all the YouTubed renditions of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” (which she also wrote) or maybe a video titled “Me and James Brown in my studio, 1984, where he improvised a song about me and my dog, Orbit.”

While Allee  nearly lost me after that fall collaboration with pre-Toyota Pomplamoose (no link because post this holiday commercial season you already get what that sounds like), her new project with Hidden Los Angeles has pulled me back in.

Project Milly is an outpouring of love and support for Milly Del Rubio, the sole surviving member of the Del Rubio Triplets, they of the platinum hair and white booties.  Its mission? “To shower [Milly] with as many Valentine’s Day cards as humanly possible.” Why? “Just because it’s a nice thing to do and it will really lift her spirits to let her know the Del Rubio Triplets are remembered!”

Don’t remember the Del Rubio Triplets? Not a problem. Allee, whose history with the women goes way back, tells you all about them in this recent post, which also provides an apt introduction to Allee, her obsessions (#1=kitsch), her wide circle of friends (she drops Clive Davis, Joni Mitchell, and Katey Sagal “a.k.a. Peg Bundy,” in this post alone), and, of course, her breathless prose style:

“when the triplets opened the door to the porta potty-like shed that was their dressing room … we beheld the most magnificent vestiges of human kitsch we had ever seen.”

Check Allee out and don’t forget to send Milly your best.
